Home Safes: Size, Fire Ratings & Keeping Valuables Dry

Buying a safe is like buying a tool chest: it seems enormous until you start using it.

What size?

Approximate internal capacityStarting use

------

Under 0.5 cu ftPassports, small documents, jewelry

0.5–1.2 cu ftFolder-sized documents and a few valuables

1.2–2.0 cu ftHousehold records, electronics and expanding collections

Over 2.0 cu ftMultiple document boxes or larger storage needs

Measure usable interior dimensions, not only cubic feet. A thick fire-rated wall can dramatically reduce usable space. Consider upgrading when the safe is about 70–80% full, documents must bend, or you can no longer organize items without stacking them tightly. This is a planning guideline, not a safety rating.

Fire and theft are different ratings

Look for independently verified fire resistance for the specific contents and duration, and a burglary rating appropriate to your risk. “Fireproof” is an overstatement; heat and moisture can still damage contents. Anchoring instructions depend on safe type and fire design; follow the manufacturer and avoid unapproved penetrations.

Homeowner tip: don't let your documents grow mold

Fire-resistant safes can trap moisture. Store only dry items; use a small rechargeable desiccant or silica-gel canister per the manufacturer's instructions, and a compact humidity indicator. Inspect the contents monthly at first. Keep paper in archival sleeves where appropriate and avoid sealed plastic around damp items. Never store wet leather, clothing or photographs. For very sensitive documents and digital media, verify that the safe is rated for them; ordinary paper-fire ratings may not suffice.
